FEP Turning
FEP Turning
Plastic turning operations are among SPN’s services. The company has a selection of high-performance machine tools for this type of machining operation. The team uses both conventional and digital lathes to work the materials and meet customer requirements. SPN is involved in the turning of all high performance plastics such as FEP. FEP turning is carried out using a chuck and a turret equipped with a cutting tool. The size of the workpiece, the technique used and the material determine the precision of the process.
Obtained from the polarized mixture of hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene, FEP or fluorinated ethylene propylene is characterized by its high thermal resistance. It has the ability to retain its mechanical properties even after being subjected to temperatures ranging from -270°C to 240°C. FEP is resistant to wear, creep and traction. The material has a high resistance to solar radiation as well as to stress cracking. It has a very low coefficient of friction due to its composition. One of the characteristics appreciated in FEP is its impermeability. Its moisture absorption coefficient is around 0.01%.
FEP is used in the design of switchgear, sealed parts and various pipes. This thermoplastic is also used for cable protection in the aeronautics sector thanks to its specific characteristics. FEP is appreciated in the manufacture of parts requiring a high degree of sealing, such as gaskets.
